if you’re old enough to know what a pay phone is, and you see one of these old Western Electric and GTE pay phones, you instantly know that’s public infrastructure for you. You don’t have to ask for permission. You can just go up and use it. If it’s just a courtesy phone, it’s not always 100 percent clear what that’s for or if it’s okay to use.

I'm my recent cross country trek I only caught a couple of these guys in the wild. I didn't check to see if they were working, but they were in rest stops so I assume they were.
