Selma Lagerlöf was the 1th woman to be awarded the #Nobel Prize for #Literature in 1909 - but not without the Nobel committee almost coming to blows.
All her works are fantasy, which is why Carl David af Wirsén, secretary of the committee, was against her. He blocked her yearly. In 1908, many were set on Lagerlöf, but Wirsén forced a compromise.
They gave the prize to Rudolf Eucken, an obscure German.
Lagerlöf won the next year, while Wirsén bemoaned the #past lost until his death in 1912.
