In my experience, Pacific Wrens have two modes. They either hide. so deeply inside a shrub or a bush or a really dense tree so that even though you can hear them perfectly, you will never even catch a glimpse of them. Or they find a spot of perfect light with a beautiful soft background and and toss out one perfect pose after the next.

These Pacific Wrens are very small and not very flashy - no bright yellow heads or scarlet underparts, but when these guys sing - and they often do, the sound is big and beautiful.

Early evening in the park by Silver Creek; rather hushed in mood. Unlike most of town, this place rests perpetually dim under a tall elder canopy of Douglas-firs. But Varied Thrushes don't mind the chilly weather this spring and are in full song - vreeee? Vreeeeee! At least four, some seemingly very close, but such a ventriloquistic sound that I never spot one. And once, from the fern-thick hillside above, a #PacificWren unlooses its tumbling rush of music.
