A quotation from George Orwell

All nationalists have the power of not seeing resemblances between similar sets of facts. A British Tory will defend self-determination in Europe and oppose it in India with no feeling of inconsistency. Actions are held to be good or bad, not on their own merits, but according to who does them, and there is almost no kind of outrage — torture, the use of hostages, forced labour, mass deportations, imprisonment without trial, forgery, assassination, the bombing of civilians — which does not change its moral colour when it is committed by ‘our’ side.

George Orwell (1903-1950) English journalist, essayist, writer [pseud. of Eric Arthur Blair]
Essay (1945-05), “Notes on Nationalism,” Polemic Magazine (1945-10)

When you're stuck in a meeting with Head Office but all you can think about is your hereditary enemy.

If I learned one thing from Good Omens (and I've learnt many things) it's that you always have a choice to be who you want to be, to be with who you want to be and to create your own side.

Seems like so many of the stories we tell (also interesting to think about why these ones) are about people who found themselves in the right place at the right time, and have all the fixings of historicization. More and more I'm recognizing a desire in myself to hear the stories and thoughts of the unexceptional nihilistic and/or anarchic beings who live in the wrong place or wrong time and who don't act in the ways #ourside glamorizes.
Might be a bit depressing but I'm up for that.
Maybe this is the role of certain types of fiction?
