Blog - The Lovecraft Investigations - #Crowley

TL;DR: An interesting, informative and well produced documentary of the life of Aleister Crowley. It feels like you are listening in on the production meetings as the podcast team are discussing their research. This does feel a little odd if you're used to the previous #thelovecraftinvestigations
seasons when they were digging and following a plot, but I enjoyed it.

Crowley - The Lovecraft Investigations

I've recently listened to The Lovecraft Investigations - Crowley . This is a bit of a departure from the previous seasons as it wasn't funde...

So, a few years back, BBC Radio 4 did four seasons of a podcast show called The Lovecraft Investigations - the case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Whisperer in Darkness, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, and The Haunter of the Dark. These are not readings of the stories, they are a tale of two investigative journalist podcasters who stumble upon mysterious events while researching the disappearance of Ward, then become drawn deeper and deeper in as they find out more. I discovered it after they'd been out for a while, and as it happened they didn't get funded for a fifth season. It is still available to listen to, and it is excellent.

A season 4.5 was crowdfunded by the producers/cast members, a documentary on Aleister Crowley. It's now available for separate purchase.

Today a full season 5 is being crowdfunded - The Call of Cthulhu. It's hit the target and two stretch goals within a few hours, and I have every expectation that it will be a superb production. Have a look, listen to the first seasons, maybe back the new season:

Wow the @hermeticlibrary is REAL pissed off at me now! Gosh maybe I should start taking Aleister #Crowley to little pieces. I think there's a lot of folks in #magic, or #magick if you like, who would be glad to see Crowley finally kicked into irrelevance.

But the question is: what exactly is Crowley actually relevant for? What did he do that is still considered, at least by a residue of hardcore ceremonial mages, worthy of being commemorated and celebrated still?

I haven't collected enough information to be sure of my guess here, but I suspect that Aleister Crowley ought to be remembered in much the same way that Mrs. O'Leary's cow is remembered (in fables) as the being who incited the Great Chicago Fire. It's my suspicion that Crowley must have pulled off one big ritual that...opened the floodgates, as it were, and brought the Great God Pan rampaging back into the world to addle the heads of Western occultists and make them think that anything was possible, because that's what Pan does—he tempts foolish human beings with the intoxicating possibility of Anything, itself. Under the influence of the Great God Pan, for a little while, all things seem within reach.

There was a time when Christians could proclaim (fortified by Plutarch) that Pan was dead. Then there came a time when that was definitely no longer true. Who was responsible for that change? I suggest that it may have been Aleister Crowley.

But was that a deed worth celebrating? Should we therefore remember Crowley forever? 😬 I uh...no. No, I don't think so. It was a disaster, maybe an inevitable disaster, but it happened, and it's been a damaging influence on Western occultism and magic practice ever since.
