I have tickets to see #OtisGibbs tonight at First Ave (he’s opening for Lucero), or was - the shows been postponed due to the blizzard. I do hope it gets rescheduled with the same opening act.
One cool thing, though, it caused me to look at Otis’s website and I see that he and the late #ToddSnider made a #movie about #JohnPrine. That’s something to look forward to.

Het stond als aanbeveling bij een filmpje over Frank Zappa. Een filmpje met de titel Frank Zappa’s problem with David Bowie. Dat maakt nieuwsgierig. Ene Otis Gibbs. “My weekly chat over coffee. It’s a good way to spend a Saturday morning, I promise.” Vooruit, kopje koffie erbij en kijken.
Otis Gibbs is een man met een grote baard, dan sta je bij mij al snel één-nul voor. En een prima verhaal over hoe Bowie gitarist Adrian Belew bij de band van Zappa weg kaapte. Filmpje klaar, koffie op, inderdaad een prima zaterdagochtendmomentje.
Na afloop van het filmpje zat ik wel met de vraag “wie is eigenlijk Otis Gibbs?”
Het blijkt een singer/songwriter te zijn die zijn platen liefst in eigen beheer uitgeeft, al zo’n 20 jaar bezig is en negen albums op zijn naam heeft staan. Willekeurig pikte ik er eentje uit, Souvenirs of a Misspent Youth. Mooie verhalende songs, die ergens wel wat weg hebben van Willy Vlautin. En dan het vierde nummer: It Was a Train. “From the window of the train I saw my youth pass fast.” Tien jaar oud dit nummer, maar ik moet nog zien dat ik dit jaar een nummer tegenkom met een mooiere tekstregel.
