The #OrbitReader20Plus that I've been using with my braille students was extremely unreliable on Monday with dots that wouldn't go down or come up even after turning the display off and on repeatedly which has often fixed the problem. This disrupts time and productivity, and makes it completely unreliable as a viable display to lend out to people. This is a problem reported over and over by so many people, yet #orbitResearch refuses to acknowledge the frequency with which this happens, and the overwhelming percentage of people that this is effecting. It's a fabulous teaching tool because of its size and because it can be used independently of other devices, but the unreliability and complete randomness of this dot problem truly needs to be acknowledged and addressed. Now that the company is talking about releasing other braille products which will come at a higher cost to users, if this problem isn't addressed on a small scale like the OrbitReader20, how much more serious is it going to be with a multi-line display?
Very happy with the turn around on the warranty claim for my #orbitReader20Plus #BrailleDisplay as I sent it back over new years weekend, and should have it back tomorrow. The email about what was wrong and fixed says
"We would like to update you that we have replaced the braille engine on your device due to large problematic motors on your device. Now it is working fine."
So got my #lenovo Tab M9 to use with my #orbitReader20Plus and it's great, running apps in landscape split screen works wonderfully and I can easily move between them with the #BrailleDisplay and it makes multitasking between things like #discord and #tusky so simple.
Went out today with the family for lunch and haircuts and brought my #orbitReader20Plus #BrailleDisplay along and it was great, I really need to bring it out with me more often. Just sitting there with one earbud in and the display on my lap or the table and running my phone with it was so nice.
Successfully downloaded files from #NLSBard and transferred them to my #orbitReader20Plus using my phone.
#OrbitResearch should release a #BrailleDisplay that splits the difference between the #orbitReader20Plus and the #orbitreader40 but with all the best features of all their main products, so usb-c, cursor routing, haptics and speech, wifi, address book, etc, split the cells and price as well and make it a 30 cell for $1199.
@miki #OrbitResearch already has easily replaceable batteries in all of their #BrailleDisplay and most of their other products as far as I know. However the #orbitreader20 and #orbitReader20Plus do not use USB-C which is another problem they would need to address.
@devinprater yeah maybe, though if that was the issue the #orbitReader20Plus has those and is still much cheaper.
@jamminjerry @ShariRockz @JonathanMosen This seems to be somewhat isolated to the NLS eReader as I know people who were using supported HID displays from the 13.1 build just fine, also the fact the eReader is not readily available and runs on modified software could also explain some of the problems. I tested with mine last night and could not even get it to allow input whatsoever, yet my #orbitReader20Plus works flawlessly since the moment I got it.
@devinprater So the reason the support could not be done via a play system update is apparently it needed to be added at I believe the kernel level which was not feasible via those types of updates, they added what they could with cables and the full version is what’s coming in A14 which should be both cable and wireless hid. I use my #orbitReader20Plus most of the time though so it works either way, but I’m happy my ereader will work as well soon.
