A big win in the fight against #OnlineProctoring.

The Netherlands Institute for Human Rights has sided with a student and her complaint against her school, Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam (VU). VU "must now demonstrate that the anti-cheating software it used does not discriminate." The software? Proctorio.

With the rise of #ChatGPT, schools may turn to cop shit like online proctoring, so the more evidence that shows the software's discriminatory, the better.

Anti-cheating webcam software may have discriminated based on skin color

The Netherlands Institute for Human Rights issued its first ever determination that it was plausible an algorithm discriminated against a person. A student at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam (VU) filed a complaint alleging that the software used to proctor an exam that was given remotely did not recognize her because of her skin color when she attempted to log in and complete the exam. The VU must now demonstrate that the anti-cheating software it used does not discriminate, the organization's board wrote in an interim decision.

Against Online Proctoring Library

I've worked with folx for the past 2+ years to put together the ongoing and open Against #OnlineProctoring Library. The library current has a lot - like hundreds! - of entries, ranging from journalism and peer-reviewed scholarship to blogs posts and op-eds. Let's work to abolish this racist, ableist, privacy-invading technology and the pedagogies of policing and punishment it upholds. #AgainstSurveillance.
