Completely random thought: if people were not allowed to leave anything but their single primary residence to their heirs, and could not gift anything of signicant financial value after they retire, would they 'share the wealth' with the family sooner?

Would people have multi-generational households, so they can keep a bigger primary residence? Would more families care for their elders, rather than warehousing them?
