James and Nora Joyce and Jean Rhys

Joyce's continuing interest, even with his clouded sight, in the details of women's clothes was not confined to Nora's. The novelist Jean Rhys always liked James Joyce because at a party in Paris he...

[2/2] For anyone interested in Joyce's connections to #Galway, I recommend the 2021 revised edition of "Joyce County" by Ray Burke (which, full disclosure, I copy-edited): https://stancarey.wordpress.com/2022/02/20/joyce-county-by-ray-burke/

There are countless books on Joyce's life and work; Richard Ellmann's is the best I've read. Brenda Maddox's biography of Nora is terrific, and Padraic Ó Laoi's is worth reading too

After he haunted me since even before moving to Dublin, I was many times on his footsteps, not only during Bloomsday.

He spent more time in Paris than in Dublin (!) and some of the places where he lived, wrote and drank are just around the corner from where I live now (literally).

Only to die in a Zurich hospital nearly exactly 82 years ago today.
