Nocka didn’t settle in, no matter how much I tried. In the end I had to take her to a shelter. A good one, paid, clean… but still a cage. I don’t want to leave her there, it hurts to think of it. But right now I just can’t give her the kind of real cat happiness she deserves. For now she’s safe — and I hope someone will love her the way she needs.

When the weather turned cold, I finally decided to bring Nochka home. She refused to stay in the basement, and I wouldn’t have been allowed to keep her there anyway. She didn’t want to go to the other basement with the cats, and people were no longer eager to let her into the stairwell. I brought her home a few times, and eventually just kept her. “Well, she’s been spayed now. Nochka is wearing a recovery vest — or at least she was. She tore it off almost immediately. Luckily, the incision is small and didn’t open. I settled her in the basement for a bit, but had to let her out the very next day. She was extremely displeased. She really doesn’t like being indoors.”

Because of the weather, the cats’ mating season kept going. Nochka was hiding from the tomcats up in a tree. By lunchtime I had to take her down.
