Ambrose, bishop of Milan, on Isaiah 1:17, Ps 146:9 & 132:15. Honoring widows and aiding orphans would lessen God’s wrath. This good deed is a metaphor for a future spiritual reality.

Are we too wise these days for this kind of duality— promises of future spiritual realities and temporal works (that make you get off the prayer couch) reinforcing each other?

How can you honor the widow?

A person can capriciously risk their life by taking a $250,000 voyage to see the Titanic in its final resting place — a watery grave 12,500 feet below sea level — for 1,500+ people, all of whom it’s obviously too late to save.

A person, without risking their life, can compassionately donate $250,000 worth of nutritious food, to feed thousands of people, all of whom can obviously still be saved from death by starvation.
