Article on Russia's "Tsar Laser", an under-construction bigger version of the US National Ignition Facility which you sometimes hear about making #Fusion Energy Breakthroughs by zapping a target with multiple giant lasers.
Just like the #NationalIgnitionFacility, #TsarLaser's main job is the development and maintenance of nuclear weapons. But it means they feel less need to do live-fire testing of weapons, so that's good.

Russia Is Powering Up a Giant Laser to Test Its Nuclear Weapons

To check that atomic weapons work, scientists run simulations of explosions using high-energy lasers—and Russia is building the strongest one of all.

How They Did It: Fusion Ignition with NIF Laser Scientist

How did we achieve nuclear fusion? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice learn about human-made thermonuclear fusion, the world’s most powerful lasers, and harnessing nuclear power with operations manager of The National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Labs, Bruno Van Wonterghem. Can we make fusion happen with less than 300 million jules? Find out about the NIF and the work being done in nuclear energy. We discuss quantum tunneling in the sun and the energy needed to overcome repulsive forces. Is our fusion hotter than the sun? What are deuterium and tritium? Discover helium 3 and heavy hydrogen. What is the difference between a powerpoint laser and the world’s most powerful fusion lasers? Learn about the physics of lasers and what wavelength of laser is best for nuclear fusion. Can we make our most advanced lasers better? We explain what plasma is and whether fusion will be scalable. Will we one day have nuclear fusion power stations or portable fusion reactors attached to our cars? What is in store for the future of Lawrence Livermore National Labs? How can fusion be improved? Thanks to our Patrons Gavin Mallow, Willest74, Isaac Labbe, Allen, and Beefcake for supporting us this week. NOTE: StarTalk+ Patrons can watch or listen to this entire episode commercial-free. The False Promise of Nuclear Fusion | The Tyee

We’ll never achieve unlimited energy. And for that perhaps we should be grateful.

The Tyee

"Over the past few years, the #NationalIgnitionFacility has passed some key milestones, including ignition of #fusion and creating what's termed a #BurningPlasma.

But unexpectedly it appears that burning plasmas behaves differently from those that have experienced ignition. And there's no obvious explanation for the difference."

Laser-driven fusion’s internal energies not matching up with predictions

There's a change in behavior when the plasma starts burning, and nobody knows why.

What enabled the big boost in fusion energy announced this week?

Two megajoules of laser yielded three megajoules of fusion energy.

We at the #FBI are extremely excited to announce that, thanks to recent breakthroughs in #fusion technology at the National Ignition Facility, we have been issued new fusion powered laser weapons!

These weapons, which we affectionately refer to as "lightsabers," are not only incredibly powerful, but also offer a level of precision and control that we have never experienced before. They have quickly become a valuable tool in our law enforcement arsenal.

Our agents have been having a blast training with the #lightsabers and putting them to use in the field. The reactions from suspects have been priceless, to say the least. It's safe to say that crime rates have been dropping dramatically in areas where we have deployed agents with lightsabers.

We are constantly amazed by the capabilities of these incredible weapons, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for the FBI and our lightsabers.

Thank you to the National Ignition Facility for their hard work in making this possible. We are truly grateful for this exciting development in law enforcement technology.

Stay safe out there, and may the force be with you!
