Meta is cutting roughly 200 jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area, with 124 positions eliminated in Burlingame and another 74 in Sunnyvale. The layoffs, slated to take effect in late May, are part of a broader effort by the Facebook parent company to trim its workforce as it pours billions into artificial‑intelligence projects. Executives have warned that the cuts could expand to affect more than 20 percent of Meta’s staff—about 15,000 workers—while CEO Mark Zuckerberg has signaled that AI tools are allowing single, highly‑skilled employees to accomplish work that once required large teams.
Even as it reduces headcount, Meta says it continues to hire for critical roles; the firm’s total workforce stood at 78,865 at the end of December 2025, a 6 percent year‑over‑year increase. The company is shifting its strategy from labor‑intensive operations to machine‑driven systems, highlighted by a planned $10 billion investment in a new data center in El Paso, Texas, and an overall commitment of up to $135 billion toward AI. Recent weeks have already seen the company let go of about 700 employees across operations, recruiting, sales, and its Reality Labs unit, marking the largest wave of cuts since the “year of efficiency” layoffs of 2022‑23.
Meta’s moves mirror a wider trend across the tech sector, where more than 152 000 workers were laid off in 2024 and at least 118 000 in 2025, with estimates for 2026 ranging from 45 000 to over 52 000. Major firms such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Salesforce are also reshaping their workforces, cutting repetitive, rule‑based roles while aggressively recruiting talent for AI‑related positions. Analysts note that AI is becoming the new fixed cost, relegating many human tasks to a variable‑cost model, though some executives caution that replacing people with machines does not automatically yield the promised efficiencies.
