Have you ever noticed that there are far fewer photographs of lightning from before the first sky scrapers than from after they became taller and more plentiful?
My theory is that earth-bound structures scraping the sky build up an a static charge on both them and the sky in much the same way that rubbing amber with wool does.
This would also explain why sky scrapers are often targets of lightning.
