Mariah the Scientist is the stage name used by Mariah Buckles, an R&B artist who stumbled her way into singing while she was studying biology in college, hence the moniker. At first, she was singing mostly lower tempo traditional ballads. Then, on her second album, she started to stretch her scope with mid-tempo songs, placing more emphasis on beats and atmospheric keyboards and working with guest rappers. Her voice has a strong presence, and the sparseness of the arrangements places it right at the center of her music. She sits back comfortably with her R&B style grooves and delivers her songs on a type of loose, low-drama, close to natural mannerism that is reminiscent of Frank Ocean at times.
Non-western traditions tend to sound psychedelic to western ears, and Tuhaf's music has a bit of that for sure. They also happen to be an honest-to-goodness psychedelic band. Our #songoftheday is "Mere Guld".
