Opponents of Trump-backed Missouri redistricting seek to force a vote

Opponents of Missouri’s new congressional map have submitted thousands of petition signatures calling for a statewide referendum on the plan backed by President Donald Trump. Organizers of the petition drive said they turned in about 300,000 signatures Tuesday to the secretary of state’s office. That’s well more than the roughly 110,000 signatures needed to suspend the U.S. House districts from taking effect until a public vote can be held next year. But the signatures still must be formally verified by election authorities. Republicans hope the new voting districts could help their party win additional seats in Congress in next year’s midterm elections.

First step in #FreeSpeech protection taken! Lower court strikes down Missouri's 2023 law targeting #librarians and #teachers that caused hundreds of books to be removed!

It will be appealed, of course - my taxpayer dollars going to defending #BookBans rather than, say, funding schools. The #MO Supreme Court is hardly a bastion of liberalism, so a long legal road ahead. (caveats concluded)

Yay! 🥳

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has called a special legislative session to redraw the state's congressional map and shift a seat to the Republican Party, and also to create new hurdles for citizen initiatives: https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/government-politics/article_34cd0710-36ea-4d6b-bff4-2e62c876e286.html

I am livid about this authoritarian move by my Senator, Eric Schmitt, who has unilaterally decided that what #StLouis needs is federal police enforcement, not community-based solutions, to reduce crime. This "federal-state" collusion explicitly does not include the city government, does not represent consultations with St. Louisans directly affected, and will waste $$ at a time when the federal help St. Louis really needs is in #tornado recovery.

And this just after Missourians (not St. Louis - which rejected the proposal) voted to put our #GOP state government in charge of the #StL city police, which includes requiring a dedicated amount of funding for the police, regardless of other priorities.

I'm about to run out of characters for this toot in my first time ever, I'm so mad. Anyway, for others in #Missouri who would like to express their opinion, Sen. Schmitt's office phone is (202) 224-5721

Missouri governor repeals paid sick leave law approved by voters

Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe has signed a repeal of a law guaranteeing paid sick leave for workers and inflationary adjustments to the minimum wage. The repeal will take effect Aug. 28. Workers' rights advocates call it a betrayal while business groups argue that the policies hurt job growth. Voters in Missouri, Nebraska and Alaska all approved paid sick leave measures last November. Alaska's requirement kicked in on July 1. But lawmakers in Nebraska revised the measure before it could take effect Oct. 1. Missouri workers began earning paid sick leave May 1, but unused leave will not be guaranteed after the repeal date.

Missouri voters **just passed** this amendment in November 2024. For citizens, getting an initiative on the ballot is labor intensive - I spent a couple weekends last spring gathering signatures in mid-Missouri because the requirements are extensive and precise. Yet our #Republican dominated legislature can place issues on the ballot with a simple majority vote, regardless of how ill-conceived or contrary to just-expressed voter wishes, and we have to fight all over again. Bonus: this ballot proposal contains anti-trans bait unrelated to abortion but designed to use #transphobia to hurt women/pregnant people. But #trans folks are the real threat to women??? #abortion #MOPol #USPol #Missouri.

Missouri poised to become first to repeal capital gains tax

Missouri is poised to become the first state to repeal a common tax on profits from stocks and real estate sales. Legislation passed Wednesday would exempt capital gains from Missouri's individual income taxes starting this year and could also eventually eliminate the tax for corporations. Capital gains currently are taxed both by the federal government and by all states that impose an income tax. Supporters hope the tax repeal will boost investment and economic activity in Missouri and eventually spread to other states. But critics say it will primarily benefit the rich and leave less tax revenue available for public schools and state services.
