Unlike his grandfather Chinggis Khan, the #Mongol ruler Hulegu Khan is little known in the West. But his destruction of two Islamic empires gave him a notoriety that persists to this day.

Hulegu the Mongol | History Today

tl;dr: This #video adds to what #TimothySnyder wrote in the addendum to #OnTyranny.

https://youtu.be/ZekpT8DaV_0

It's not that I disbelieved Timothy Snyder; it's that I listened to the #audiobook of On Tyranny when the rest of my bookclub read the physical book.

That audiobook had an entire bonus section with an additional twenty points centering #Ukraine. Timothy Snyder shared that he'd written these down the previous evening. I was not prepared to communicate about the additional material because it was seriously as long or longer than the original book. I'm sure there's an expanded version out there by now, but as an audiobook listener, I'll let y'all go find it.

Aside: When a random new-to-me channel shows up in my #YouTube feed, I check when it joined. If it's too recent, I pass, regardless of the content. This channel started in 2017.

Today, I was served the random video linked above that ties into Snyder's Ukraine content.

This video affirms everything Snyder said, and adds context like the difference between the #Russian and #Ukrainian #words associated with #power. Like the words for #money and #treasury. Being reminded that #Russia has #Mongol roots added the piece I was missing.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1258, the #Mongol forces of the Ilkhanate under Hülegü sacked #Baghdad, burned its great libraries & #BaytAlHikma, ending the #AbbasidCaliphate. The calamity is a symbolic end to a #GoldenAge of Muslim dominance in science, maths, philosophy, and the arts.
