My wife and I finished watching the "Muppets Mayhem" series on #DisneyPlus. REALLY enjoyed it. Not nearly and chaotic or joke crammed as most Muppet productions. Ultra focused on the Dr. Tooth and the Electric Mayhem characters, though it does clearly exist in some kind of Muppets-extended universe. Movies, the show, and past events are referenced but not seen. But there are almost none of the expected cameos from Kermit, Piggy and crew. Intead, there are countless celebrity cameos from all over music (and a few film people). The Mayhem is treated as a real band that exists in both the Muppet universe and something akin to our own.
The humor is still silly, but less intense that we're used to, more balanced with character and story, and the script is full of heart, both for the Muppets and for the music industry that they navigate. I'd admit I went through a couple tissues in those last couple episodes.
The Mayhem is given a surprisingly detailed origin (shown in flashbacks) and sticks the landing there. You'll be far more delighted in the origin of their tour bus, for example, than you were with how Han got his last name, and it IS relevant to the story.
The spine of the series is centered on human characters, lead by Lilly Singh, as an assistant at a failing record label. She discovers that the company has a unfulfilled contract for an album from the Mayhem, and sets out to get it made and save the company from getting sold. Aiding her is the group's number-one fan, played by Tahj Mowry. The human characters are organic to the plot and mesh well with the Muppet characters. The leads are charming and likable, and I didn't spend their screen time just wishing the Animal and Janice were back.
The tone is a bit more adult than most Muppet vehicles, not in any way that children would notice, but there are references to sexuality, cohabitation, and a bit of a drug scene (hallucinations induced by roasting and eating a bag of VERY expired marshmallows found in the desert, but the analogy to mushrooms and the resulting dream-quest is obvious). I wouldn't hesitate to watch it with kids though, even young ones, and nothing sexual is shown on screen. I don't even think we get a kiss. And the sexual references, such as they are, are actually good-natured and sex-positive.
Really, if you've got Disney+, like the Muppets, music, or hopefully both, I highly recommend this.
