The First Full Moon of May

We start out the merry month of May 2026 with a Full Moon. The Moon goes through all its phases — from New Moon to Full Moon and back — in about 29.5 days on average. Most months usually have only one Full Moon because 29.5 days fit mostly within one month. But in May 2026, the timing is just right to fit in a second one, which is what we call a Blue Moon, even though the Moon doesn’t actually look blue. This is the only Blue Moon of 2026.

This year’s Full Moons have been early – February 1, March 3, and April 1. That means that today at 1:23 PM in Paradelle (ET) and a second Full Moon will sneak in on May 31 to close out the month.

In a rare astronomical coincidence, both Full Moons in May 2026 are Micromoons. This is the opposite of a Supermoon. A Micromoon occurs when the Moon is at its farthest point from Earth (apogee) in its elliptical orbit. Because the Moon is further away, it will appear roughly 14% smaller and 30% dimmer than a Supermoon. While the difference is subtle to the naked eye, it may seem slightly less imposing as it rises over the horizon compared to other months.

This Full Moon aligns with the ancient Gaelic festival of Beltane and modern May Day, traditionally celebrating the peak of spring and the coming of summer. It also coincides with Labour Day celebrations worldwide, including International Workers’ Day.

There are many names for the May Full Moon. It is commonly called the Flower Moon, Corn Planting Moon, Grass Moon, Milk Moon, Planting Moon, and the Hare Moon.

Have you ever heard of a Micromoon? Because the Moon orbits Earth on an elliptical path, its distance from us varies at different times. When it is farthest from us, it is called apogee; and when it is nearest, it is called perigee. The Micromoon, also called a Minimoon or Apogee Moon, occurs when a New Moon or Full Moon happens at apogee.

What Is a Micromoon?

A Micro Moon is when a Full Moon or a New Moon coincides with apogee, the point in the Moon's orbit farthest away from Earth. It's also known as Micro Full Moon, Micro New Moon, and Apogee Moon.

if full moon is near #perigee (earth close) it's a "#supermoon" - 14% bigger & 30% brighter than "#micromoon" near #apogee (earth far).
