“Some of the world’s top experts in #microlending recently gathered to debate a hot topic:
Has the microloan boom of the last decade actually helped global efforts to lift people out of poverty?
The event was prompted by the latest issue of the prestigious American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, which published a group of independent studies suggesting that microlending— tiny loans to poor entrepreneurs— usually fails to raise incomes.”

Microlending makes many lives better, as well!
Muhammad Yunus (now acting President of Bangladesh) pioneered the concept with Grameen Bank (~ 1974). https://grameenbank.org.bd
It took until 2005 for further expansion à la Kiva https://www.kiva.org/about

I'm lending a small amount ($25) through this microlending effort to help Adel, a Palestinian man in Bethlehem, to be able to buy the construction equipment he needs for his business in Bethlehem, in the West Bank.
I hope you'll consider doing the same. It's definitely a good cause.
Also, for my fellow #HumanisticJews --- if you lend to this loan, be sure to join the Humanistic Judaism group on Kiva, so our group will get credit for supporting this loan.

#Yunus, who called #Hasina’s resignation the country’s “second liberation day,” faced a number of corruption accusations and was put on trial during Hasina's rule.
He received the Nobel in 2006 after he pioneered #microlending, and he said the corruption charges were motivated by vengeance.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will head Bangladesh’s interim government after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country amid a mass uprising against her rule. Wednesday's announcement came from Joynal Abedin, the press secretary of President Mohammed Shahabuddin. Abedin says leaders of the student protests, the chiefs of the three divisions of the military, civil society members as well as some business leaders met with the president Tuesday to decide on the head of the interim administration. Yunus, who is in Paris for the Olympics, was not immediately reachable for comment but a student leader says he's accepted the post.
