In 1856, William Henry Perkin accidentally discovered the first synthetic dye and named it mauveine. He was trying to synthesize quinine from coal-tar distillates.

#Mauveine was revolutionary, when it was discovered. No one had ever see a #dye that vivid in human history, and the world went crazy for it. Queen Victoria of England wore a #mauve velvet gown to her daughter's wedding in 1858, and by the end of the decade, "mauve madness" had overtaken #fashion and society. Not only that, the commercialization of aniline dye chemistry would go on to revolutionize the pharmaceutical industry, as well.
