Amazon has announced MatterCasting, an open-source alternative to Chromecast and AirPlay. MatterCasting is part of the Matter standard and allows users to cast content from Fire TV Echo Show 15 to Android and iOS apps. Amazon has been implementing the standard in their ecosystem since its founding in 2019. MatterCasting will be available in the Amazon Prime Video app and is expected to roll out to other apps such as Starz, Plex, PlutoTV, SlingTV, and ZDF. The founding members of Matter, Google and Apple, are expected to add support for MatterCasting to their devices. MatterCasting does not require specific hardware and can be implemented with just an app. The new standard is set to become increasingly necessary for sending content between devices, regardless of brand.
