@GeofCox There's not a lot of countries with mandatory voting. In the Anglosphere, just Australia, I think? I'd argue that they're doing better than the US or UK.
Preferential voting is probably more important, but mandatory voting helps - it means politicians need to focus on undecided/persuadable voters, rather than focusing on the 'get out the vote' of the people already the most passionate.

Whenever the more Australian corners of your fediverse start posting multiple pics of sausages in bread, it's because we are Doing A Democracy. And we celebrate with #democracysausages because community charity BBQs and cake stalls are ubiquitous at our polling places. It's a Thing. A shared experience I feel more absurdly proud and uplifted by every time. Today is a state election in Victoria.
