Oak Beauty Moth (Biston strataria)

This species overwinters underground as a pupa, with the adults emerging in early spring. Freshly emerged moths, such as the one in this photo taken last year, are often found resting near the base of trees. Despite its name, it is not restricted to oak trees.

Once again, the lady beetle, Cetonia, in the photo—unlike in the previous video. She is vegan, but her larvae are not. She is also highly poisonous. And its larvae parasitize various species of bees; they wait on a flower, latch onto a bee, let themselves be carried into the nest, and there they eat everything they can find. I was struck by the speed and efficiency with which this particular beetle ate a blade of grass—its mandibles must be extremely sharp.
