I’m always amazed how what starts as someone asking a simple question turns into a epiphany / #learningOpportunity for me.
@jamie asked a question about old #Sun hardware / #Solaris.
And the question got me to thinking, refreshing myself on MAC addresses, and looking at registered OUIs.
It turns out that the lower nibble of the first byte of a MAC address is far, Far, FAR more likely to be a “0”, “8”, “4”, or “C” than any of the 12 other possible hexadecimal letters.
The OUI list that I’m looking at has this breakdown:
0 18219 occurrences
8 5752
4 5630
C 5557
2 13
A 5
1 2

I can't figure out if I have a Solaris 8 config problem, a hardware failure, or something with my home network that isn't "Sun compatible". I can not get either the onboard TPE or the off board TPE+SCSI adapter to connect to my network. The Ultra 1 can see inbound traffic but nothing being sent is received on the other end of the link. #SunMicrosystems #SunUltra1 #Solaris8 #retrocomputing
I have questions about @grimalkina’s comment.
• what seems non-authentic?
• why does it seem non-authentic?
• does the non-authenticity actually matter?
• how does (lack of) authenticity relate to accuracy?
I also wonder if programming is transitioning from an art ~> specialized skill ~> general skill used in domain specific ways?
Are there any patterns like math or writing or presentations in different industries?
Questions that come from me being in a place of ignorance. Seems like a #learningOpportunity for me.
I speculate that @grimalkina’s & @analog_ashley‘s paper is going to make me learn some new things to understand it and assimilate their message.
I assume that I will end up having even more questions.
But I believe that all of these questions and the associated learning opportunity will be a net positive good thing.
