I'm researching residential / small business #VOIP systems: options, capabilities, war stories, successes, failures.
System should be capable but also bog simple for everyday use.
Key elements:
Usable by extremely nontechnical users. Backwards-compatible with standard wired phonesets ideally.
Voicemail capabilities, preferably either locally-managed or locally-transferable (e.g., if VOIP provider manages voicemail, it's transferred locally as soon as possible and removed from the provider's system(s)).
Advanced call screening. Whitelisted contacts only, with options to review rejected calls, and some form of semi-automated screening, e.g., "press 1 to continue" (which I've heard is often sufficient) or "please enter your full originating phone number" (10 digits for North American calling area, international number beginning with country code otherwise, or similar), where the CallerID and entered values are compared and rejected on no match.
Whitelisting would of course be used for a select number of automated services, including acceptable automated reminders and notices.
I'm under the possible misapprehension that it's possible to set up a local VOIP server, probably running #Asterisk. Any specific guidance about this would be appreciated.
In the spirit of not putting all eggs in one basket, we're keenly interested in not having one provider for data + voice.
And in awareness of VOIP providers being prime miscreants in the ongoing robocall wars, avoiding bad-actor / black-hat providers and not being stymied by low-reputation providers is also a concern.
