Is all language metaphor? 🧐

https://philosophics.blog/2026/03/04/when-everything-is-metaphor-nothing-is/?utm_source=masto

I posted this last night. A follower chimed in. His speciality is anthropology.

Philippe Descola’s framework in Beyond Nature and Culture outlines four ontological regimes:

• Naturalism (the modern Western default)
• Animism
• Totemism
• Analogism

The “brown paper bag” isn’t just confusion — it’s language itself, crumpled around thought. We speak to find our mind, but words only sketch the outline. Like a camera aimed at a mirror, we get infinite reflections, never the source. The trip, the fall, the cloud: metaphors for thinking chasing itself in circles. 🔄🧠 #LanguageGames #Mind

Artifact drop: Constructivist Lens.
Tap to rewrite your ontology as metaphor. Because “truth” was always a house rule.

Used multiple sources to crack this one.

The WALS map for the feature "unusual consonants" ( https://wals.info/feature/19A#5/-27.372/28.872 ) shows only a few languages with clicks.

These languages write clicks on different ways. I went through the WALS languages on Omniglot ( https://omniglot.com/writing/languages.htm ) until I found one with "q" for [!].
Happened to get it first try - there may be others.

Those long CVCV sequences ... very Oceanic. Started at the first one I could think of, and followed the arrows all the way to the other geographical end of the family!

I keep expecting [æ] to have more separation between F1 & F2.

Okay, I was feeling lazy and just went with the most populous language that uses the script. I feel like I didn't really deserve to get that in one.

But I'll take it!

Cool! The hekpful hooks here were pronouncing "Ж" as [d͡ʒ] instead of [ʒ] and "Б" as [w] instead of [b], ruling out the core Slavic languages.

I searched Omniglot a bit and found a Mongolian language that has the Б/[w]. The direction arrow in the result (and the clue that it was completely unrelated) led me to the right area, and there it was!
