The Grass Is Greener by Grassella Oliphant released on Atlantic in 1967.

Review by Stephen Cook

...With guitarist Grant Green and B-3 master John Patton completing the classic organ combo setup, the trio particularly stretch out on fine numbers like "Cantaloupe Woman" and Patton's own "Soul Woman." While these cuts are marked by a progressive, almost modal sound, much of the other material, which also features tenor saxophonist Harold Ousley and trumpeter Clark Terry, has a more down home and groove-heavy flavor; this is especially true on Terry's "Peaches Are Better Down the Road" and a cover of Allen Toussaint's classic bit of New Orleans soul, "Get Out of My Life Woman." Other standouts include a rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar" and Ousley's breezy Latin swinger "The Latter Days." A great set.

Harold Vick, Steppin’ Out!, 1963 on Blue Note

Debut album from Harold Vick (as a leader), recorded Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with a wonderful supporting cast: Blue Mitchell, Grant Green, John Patton, and Ben Dixon.

Vick would also go on to play with folks like King Curtis and Aretha Franklin, and passed in 1987. Great album of early 60s Blue Note jazz.

My copy—via Academy Records in NYC—is the Blue Note Tone Poet reissue from 2022.

No healthy tunes for me tonight. I'm keeping it full fat and greasy and having a Soul Jazz evening to cheer myself up.

Starting with Big John Patton's 'The Silver Meter' from their 1963 album 'Along Came John'. Great track, much needed. Whole album is a favourite of mine.

Big John Patton - Let 'Em Roll

Here's a 1965 soul jazz set from Patton (B3), Grant Green (guitar), Otis FInch (drums) and Bobby Hutcherson (vibes). It's hard *not* to see this as influencing Medeski, Martin, Scofield and Woods. But even if not, it's great.

Nice new Tone Poet version, with the packaging and pressing you'd expect.

here’s my best of 2022 list. probably some things i forgot, and i’m thinking about doing a separate edition just for local bands.

nothing groundbreaking if you’ve been following me for any length of time, but maybe you’ll find something new as we close a weird year.
