It's irrational fear.

Just like hitler and the germans feared the Jews.

That irrational fear can pick out any target.
Whether responsible or not is irrelevant.

Since already the fear itself is irrational.

It's an abomination so many people have to die for irrational fear.

My best guess at the root of this irrational fear is the same i have for the acting up of America and the rise of the far right in Europe: old men being scared of the world taking control out of their hands after millenias of patriarchy.

I can't be the only person with the totally rational fear that my arm will be chopped off by a machete-wielding assailant when I reach to grab my cash from the drive-up atm, right? Like, my arm is just so exposed, and a machete attack would be super effective and buy time for the thief to get away. That's not even taking in to account the shock factor of immediately having only one arm or seeing my severed arm bleeding on the ground
