bsmall2>.. academia.. linked to funding agencies.. funding comes from.. industries. I did look.. strong linkages to biotech, fertilizer, herbicides, even oil and gas, horticulture, agriculture, industrial forestry.. Academics are supposed to be independent.. But I think lot of universities are heavily invested in these industries. None of us are really.. free... And that changes the academic world.. inevitably influenced by it, even if you didn’t understand the influence on you.
