I did look.. strong linkages to biotech, fertilizer, herbicides, even oil and gas, horticulture, agriculture, industrial forestry.. Academics are supposed to be independent.. But I think lot of universities are heavily invested in these industries. None of us are really.. free... And that changes the academic world.. inevitably influenced by it, even if you didn’t understand the influence on you.

‘The forest is crying out to us through fires, floods, and hurricanes. It’s a cry for help’: A conversation with forest ecologist Suzanne Simard

"We have to use whatever tools we can to save these places that are the future for our kids. If we don't have these places, we don't have us. I mean, the world will carry on, but it might be without us if we don’t get serious."

🌳 PILLAR FOUR — Boundary Dissolution
Suzanne Simard's mycorrhizal research: mother trees pump surplus carbon through fungal networks to struggling saplings. Across species. No board approval required.
ML tools now decode sperm whale phonemes and regional dialects.

The boundary between humanity and nature is a fiction — and the planet's physical systems are beginning to enforce that fact.

Recognizing reciprocity: a sustainable indigenous approach to forest management.

The scientist and botanist Suzanne Simard is famous for her groundbreaking 1997 study, in which she demonstrated that two different tree species can share resources. This discovery overturned traditional Western forestry thinking, leading to a reconsideration of the idea that trees compete with each other. Instead, Simard paved the way for the idea that these trees can support each other and that industrial logging practices can neglect the overall health of the forest.

In recent years, Simard has argued that indigenous knowledge may be the key to saving the Earth and its forests. Environmental reporter Erica Gies spent time in the field with Simard and her collaborators, exploring Simard’s most recent project, the Mother Tree Project, which aims to find the most sustainable forestry practices for both people and ecosystems.

The Mother Tree Project: A Sustainable Initiative

Gies joined Mongabay Newscast to explain what she learned from Simard and why she supports indigenous knowledge and systems, governed by principles of reciprocity. Her vision changed radically after reading the dissertation of marine resource ecologist Teresa Sm’hayetsk Ryan, now a collaborator of Simard.

“She realized that people are also a very important part of the complex forest relationships,” says Gies. “This is much closer to a mentality of reciprocity. If you take, you must also give back. There is a responsibility to care for the system. Because if not, and if we overexploit its resources, it would be very easy to starve.”
