I got one student (out of 16) to volunteer at a Naturalization Ceremony in downtown Worcester, helping usher as ~600 people were naturalized. She said it was the highlight of her day and was so glad I mentioned the opportunity in class. Calling this a MAJOR teaching win! #citizennation #pedagogy #teaching #highered #volunteering #civics #citizenship #historianatwork #histodons

Needing a couple videos of a college-level history course, for my Teaching History students to deconstruct and analyze. There are surprisingly few posted online. I'll probably use one from @jbf1755's excellent Yale Open Courses American Revolution -- as a masterclass in lecturing. (Joanne, how many students were in that lecture hall, more or less?)

Todays agenda on this frosty morning in New England: check on barn animals (including a very elusive barn cat up in the attic). Go for a walk. Go to my office and grade. Meet with 3 history capstone students I’m mentoring this term. On my way home, stop by and visit an Afghan family we’ve become friends with since they moved to Worcester last year. After dinner meet up with a couple who’s just begun attending my church congregation. #FridayPlans #fallsemester #historianatwork #worklifebalance
Lunchtime reading today: Jeanne Theoharis’s fierce intro to her book A More Beautiful and Terrible History. This after a lecture in Citizen Nation about race in immigration law based on Mae Ngai’s work. #histodons #teaching #pedagogy #historianatwork #civilrightshistory #womenalsoknowhistory
