Part 2
Hiroshima Castle

While it was spared the demolishment that many other castles met during the Meiji Period, like the rest of the city, Hiroshima Castle was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945.
13 years later, its main keep was rebuilt in concrete with an attractive, partially wooden exterior.
Sadly the main keep was closed permanently to the public in March 2026 due to concerns about its earthquake resistance.

Part 5
Hiroshima Castle

The parts of the Ninomaru were reconstructed using original building methods and materials in the 1990s. They include the castle's main gate and two turrets adjoined by a long storehouse.

There are some "maybe" plans to eventually rebuild the main keep in wood; however, no decision has yet been made.

Part 1
Hiroshima Castle

Also known as the Carp Castle, it is a good example of a castle built on a plain in the center of a city as opposed to hilltop and mountaintop castles. Its main keep is five stories tall, and its grounds are surrounded by a moat. Also within the castle's precincts are a shrine, some ruins and a few reconstructed buildings of the Ninomaru (second circle of defense).

The exterior of the castle tower will be retained even after the closure, but the interior exhibition rooms will no longer be open to the public.

The Japan Times

Fukushima Masanori (福島正則) became lord, but was replaced by Asano Nagaakira (浅野長晟) when he repaired the castle (after a flood) without bakufu permission in 1619.

The atomic blast likely destroyed the original castle's lower pillars and it collapsed. It was rebuilt in 1958.
