Arriva al 32' il primo squillo della partita, con la transizione veloce dei rossoneri a trovare la combinazione tra Pulisic e Rabiot che manda al tiro il francese, para Montipò. Chance per l'ex Juventus, che però poco più tardi siglerà la rete del vantaggio milanista: imbucata con il tempo giusto di Leao proprio per Rabiot, che col suo mancino incrocia battendo così il portiere dell'Hellas.
Il Verona reagisce e nel recupero va vicino al pari, con la fuga di Belghali che scappa alle spalle della difesa del Milan e tenta l'interno destro, è reattivo Maignan a chiudergli lo specchio. Si chiude il primo tempo, con Allegri che nella ripresa chiede ancora più pazienza ai suoi, mentre il Verona appare più propositivo. Sammarco inserisce Vermesan, che a metà ripresa impaurisce due volte il Milan: prima la conclusione potente che dopo una deviazione costringe Maignan al tuffo; poi con un tiro a giro dalla sinistra, di poco lontano dal secondo palo.
Brivido per i rossoneri, che al 74' troverebbero il raddoppio sul cross di Saelemaekers per il colpo di testa vincente di Gabbia, vanificato però da un fuorigioco precedente di Gimenez. Al 90' è Saelemaekers ad avere la palla del 2-0, sul mancino a giro dall'interno dell'area che viene salvato da Valentini sulla linea.
