Announcement from #SpinozaHavurah (an international online Humanistic Jewish community):

Join us on Saturday, January 25th at 10 am Eastern (4 pm UK) for a #Farbrengen (Jewish discussion session) led by @jmb.

We will start our together with a short niggun and maybe a special song to listen to, but then will transition into some of time of discussion on the topic of Self-Care during hard times from a Humanistic Jewish perspective. Along the way we will have a few interactive activities (including some light stretching) and of course some breaks for a drink (alcoholic or not, as is your custom), and finally close with our #Humanistic version of the Mourner's #Kaddish.

Very thoughtful response to this query in The Bintel Brief (advice column from #TheForward).

My favorite part is this quote, "“I do think you can find your place in Jewish community, but you might not find everything you’re looking for in one community,"

This has definitely been my experience. I would be very unhappy if I was forced to choose one Jewish Community to belong to exclusively. I need my #humanistic #havurah for fellowship, inspiration, and intellectual engagement with fellow non-theists, but I also need my local brick and mortar #Reform synagogue for the experience of being part of a large pluralistic community, as well as all of the in-person opportunities for community engagement (and of course all of the programming they provide for my son).

And... I also need my non-Jewish spiritual community, my lovely quirky progressive #Mennonite church where I remain an associate member. I need to be in a space sometimes where I can be unapologetic about prioritizing #peace above all other values.

I’m trans, frum, anti-Zionist and lonely. Should I stop trying to fit in where I’m not wanted?

Bintel Brief has some advice for a trans man seeking a spiritual home in the Orthodox world and a political home in the secular world.

Very excited about this new episode of the #JudaismUnbound podcast, an interview with Michael Strassfeld, one of the co-authors of the #JewishCatalog, to discuss his new book "#Judaism, disrupted." The discussions was broad and included unpacking #Liturgy, #JewishMusic, #Deconstuction, #Havurot, and #Synagogues.

Look for thoughts in response to this episode on ep, #2 of the #JewishAlmanac podcast this weekend.

Judaism Unbound Episode 366: Judaism, Disrupted - Michael Strassfeld — Judaism Unbound

Michael Strassfeld was one of the co-authors of The Jewish Catalog , a book released in 1973 (happy 50th anniversary!) that served as a kind of "Jewish do-it-yourself kit" -- and became one of the bestselling Jewish books of all time. He joins Dan Libenson and Lex Rofeberg to spe

Ari, this is a beautiful teaching! I am sharing with my #havurah. Growing up I never learned anything from the #Maharal, I was only introduced to him in the last decade. Now I see how much more there is to learn. Hopefully in the coming year more Hebrew schools and Jewish adult ed will feature the Maharal and other of our great thinkers

About #converting to #Judaism: Judaism is not a religion, it is a #kehillah (tribe/family.) One can't "identify" as a Jew. One must go through #gerut ("conversion) to Judaism by

1. A course of study with a rabbi & Jewish teachers
2. Fulfilling the #mitzvah of #tevilah (immersion in a mikveh)
3. For men, circumcision or hatafat dam brit.
4. Joining a (real world, not social media) #synagogue, #havurah, kehillah

An intermarried couple joins a synagogue. What are the boundaries for participating in Jewish prayer services? The answer varies significantly among Jewish denominations

When's the last time your synagogue or Hebrew School taught about the prophet Jeremiah? Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) study is just as important as Talmud
