Some days this captures the mood.

How do you know / Tzipporah

In a dream of a dark room lit by candlelight
In an empty house in the dead of night
My ancestors came to me one by one

Slowly, they came into view
Familiar faces, faces that were new
Recent and from times long gone

Some had dark skin, some had skin that was light
Some wore ‘hatan’ some had ‘peyot’
They asked what troubled my mind
I told them what had become of my home

And I said, “How do you know when it’s time to leave?
What are the signs that you need to flee?
How do you find the strength to leave your home
And everything you’ve ever known?
How do you know when it’s time to leave?”

#War is stupid. #Purim is the happiest of Jewish holidays, celebrated with dressing up in costumes and reading the book of Esther, which tells of saving the Jews in ancient Persia (perfect timing). Today, Israelis are celebrating as they can. The photos are all of people participating in the reading in public bomb shelters.

I do not need refuge from the #UK.
The world needs refuge from the US.

‘Happy.. uh.. winter festival!’
‘Have a great.. what’s it called again?’
‘Enjoy your Christm— uh I mean.. enjoy!’

People have been really awkward this year, but in a lovely and charming way, and I really appreciate the effort… but honestly, it’s OK to say ‘Happy Christmas’ to Jews, we won’t self-destruct 🎄🕎

Seeing a Hanukkiah and a dreidel glowing in the heart of a Christmas holiday lights festival stopped me in my tracks.

So far from Israel. In a world where Jewish people are being hunted in the streets. After days of feeling shattered, angry, and unmoored.

And then—there they were.

Two ancient symbols calling to my heart and soul, reminding me who we are.

I felt the cry of resilience echo through our entire story. A people who rise. A people who endure. A people held together by faith, memory, and community.

In that moment, I felt the earth beneath my feet again. The darkness loosened its grip. The light returned.

This is what community does in the face of evil and hate. This is how despair becomes eternal light.

Well meaning friend I haven't seen in a long time: "Happy #Hanukkah! I still remember the time you lit that Hanukkah candle."

Me: "Thank you! Can you be more specific? I've lit many Hanukkah candles..."
