October 28, 2013: It was out last day in the park, and was mostly downhill. As we were getting close to the boundary, we came across these bears. They didn't care that we stopped to watch them, and we could've stayed for hours. After crossing Fontana Dam, we discovered the snack bar was closed and the vending machine broken. So we hitched to the restaurant in town for dinner and a few drinks.

October 27, 2013: some rain overnight melted all the snow. It was pretty foggy all day. The hike down to the gap was quick, but the climb back up to Clingmans Dome felt long. Since there's a road to the top, there were a lot of people. No views though, even from the tower. I talked with some hikers who were thinking of hiking next year. No one at the shelter, must be a weekday.

October 26, 2013: the sunrise was ok, not as good as sunset. As expected, it was cold. The snow lingered until the early afternoon when it all melted. At lunch we said goodbye to Biner and Bernie, they're just hiking a lot slower than Pivot Dude and me. At the shelter this evening there are a lot of weekenders. They've built a fire, so I went complain too much.

October 25, 2013: it was gray and overcast all morning, so we stayed in the warm hostel until lunch. After eating we couldn't put off leaving, so we headed out into the cold. It was a long climb up Mt Cammerer, but not a hard one. There was snow in the shady sections.
We decided to sleep in the lookout this evening. It's enclosed, so it'll probably be warmer than a normal shelter. Biner and Bernie are here with us, and it's a fun evening. Great sunset too!

Been a tough year and hadn't managed to use the Smoky Mountain Park parking pass once (it expires on the 30th) so we shoe-horned in a trip today. Have never braved the area in peak leaf season, but it was cold and we were early. Gorgeous spot.
