‘We got lazy and complacent’: Swedish pensioners explain how abolishing the wealth tax changed their country.

For some Swedes, the question isn’t simply whether a wealth tax works, but what kind of society has been lost with its abolition.

Sweden’s gini coefficient, the most common way to measure inequality, has reached 0.3 in recent years, up from around 0.2 in the 1980s.

My partner went to go look at a rental in Kits

It’s the basement suite of a duplex (so 4 units)

The rent is high, the place is small, and the upstairs folks only live there a few months each year

But they have all the amenities: the yard, the garage, etc

Love it when the literal underclasses subsidize their landlord's part-time luxury lifestyle

#GiniCoefficient

Income inequality in Canada, as measured by the Gini coefficient, has changed marginally in the last fifty years, and is lower now than what it was 25 years ago.

Wealth of the top 0.0001% in the US as a share of total US wealth. (Top 0.0001% = 19 richest American households in 2024, 4 richest households in 1913) #inequality | inequality | #oligarchs | oligarchs | This also might be interesting for people who search for #Gini or #GiniCoefficient

...the higher the #GiniCoefficient in a society, the larger the risk for #CivilWar.

If I. remember it correctly, the #CivilWar risk for the #US has more than doubled in recent decades, small wonder, regarding the proliferation of millionaires and billionaires in that period.

George Monbiot has seen it all, or most of it. His research is thorough; his conclusions are sound. Why aren't we listening?

"The one thing that can stop the rise of the far right is the one thing mainstream parties are currently not prepared to deliver: greater equality. The rich should be taxed more, and the revenue used to improve the lives of the poor. However frantically centrist parties avoid the issue, there is no other way."

Rightwing populists will keep winning until we grasp this truth about human nature

Economic inequality breeds resentment and a desire to get even. That’s what fuels support for even incompetent regimes, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

In Johannesburg, South Africa, and took this pic. This country has the most economically unequal society in the world with a #ginicoefficient of 63. In one picture you see this writ large - a beggar being turned away empty handed by the driver of a #lamborghini. #economics #inequality #southafrica #africa

@BerelYoudovich

It tells a disastrous story.
The #GiniCoefficient must be really bad now.

I saw a small table here on the WE by how much Musk, Zuckerberg, etc. had gotten richer since 2010, which why I asked.
The CAGR implied was mind blowing.

This is why I say, #AbolishTheBillionaires.

Maybe it would need to be: no group of people related to a 3rd degree may have accumulated wealth of more than 1 bn (probably still too much.)

When people like Musk...
