To be an anti-Zionist in 2026 is to deny Israel’s right to exist at a time when radical views have permeated the discourse of left-wing parties in Western countries, fuelling political polarization and violence against Jews unseen since the Holocaust. Left-wing denunciations of Israel’s conduct in Gaza, legitimate on their own, are now routinely laced with antisemitic tropes and dog whistles that serve to encourage anti-Israel extremists.

The new NDP president, Niall Ricardo, greeted last fall’s ceasefire in Gaza, which included a plan to prevent Hamas from rebuilding its military capability, by posting: “The only entity that needs deradicalization and disarmament is the one committing genocide: Israel. Zionism is the sin, genocide is the crime.”

Many #Canadians I know have long considered certain #USAnians - such as those in #Minnesota, #Michigan Upper Peninsula, maybe #Wisconsin - to be unofficial "honorary Canadians". They share many things with Canada, from climate and geography to some aspects of culture, making them more like us than many other parts of the #USA.

There are some who are interested in making this arrangement official, with these parts of the USA becoming Canada's 11th province. I'm not sold on the idea at this point, but it's worth talking about.

I mention this because I would just like to let these potential future Canadians know that should this come to pass, their province will be named South Manitoba. Sorry, I don't make the rules.

The workers are always the ones to suffer when big sporting events like the FIFA World Cup come to town.
