Freshwater, Sediments, Stress: How Climate Change Is Altering Patagonia’s Underwater Forests. @MARUM team joins Chilean-German expedition to explore the future of #GiantKelp forests in the Magallanes Fjords ➡️ https://www.marum.de/en/giant-kelp.html

"After a #ForestFire, rain sweeps dirt and ash... When that excess grit hits the #ocean, it can both hurt and help the #kelp. For one, the rich #nutrients can fuel the growth of marine life, but cloudy water also reduces the availability of sunlight, which can stunt growing kelp stalks. In addition, excess sediment can hinder #GiantKelp holdfasts from anchoring to the rocky #seafloor."

Kelp is a habitat, a carbon sink, and a binding agent in your ice cream. But new research shows that California’s kelp forests are affected by the fate of their counterparts on land.

“The Giant Kelp Restoration Project was established as a desperate attempt to save the last of Tasmania's beautiful and once widespread giant kelp forests.
“In the space of one human lifetime, 95 per cent have vanished.
“Scientists say that terrible rate of loss is due to the extension of the East Australian Current, which now brings warm, nutrient-poor water all the way along Tasmania's east coast, replacing the cold, sub-Antarctic waters the kelp used to thrive in.”

Macroalgae are important ecosystem engineers on temperate rocky reefs, with some species (e.g., #giantkelp) explaining much variation in the diversity and composition of temperate reef communities. Not to mention...they are very cool...
