Professor teaching GenBio, Marine Biology, Oceanography, Microbiology, and Zoology at a Community College in Southern California.

My research speciality is marine microbiology, focusing on harmful algal bloom ecology. I still manage a HAB monitoring citizen science project in SoCal, but my day to day life is currently devoted to working on increasing STEM student success with active learning pedagogy.

I don't create original posts often, but I read every day, and boost what I enjoy.

I am completely appalled that the supreme court denied cert in the Stroble case today.

It has been settled federal law that Native citizens who live and work on their reservation are exempt from state taxes. To deny a hearing on this matter and thus giving credence to the wrongheaded ruling by the Oklahoma supreme court is a direct attack on our inherent sovereignty.

It also means Natives may be taxed twice.

But please do go on about the equal rule of law.

Someone asked me for a refund over this post, so I’d like to make something clear: our community consists of trans and gay and disabled people and people of color and people whose first language is not English and a whole host of other kinds of marginalization and I have no plans to ever stop celebrating that. If that’s a problem for you, I am extremely happy to give you your money back.

I was on the road today when Jackson Browne's 1973 song "Doctor, My Eyes" came on the radio. I'd never listened closely to the lyrics. Musically, it's this fast, upbeat shuffle. But the poem is a song of desperation... about how we exile unwanted feelings, until a day comes that we can't feel anything at all.

I was in tears myself by the end. Because I've been feeling that numbness creeping up for quite a while. And he managed to touch it: that awful "prize" for learning how not to cry.

"You can't support abolition/universal healthcare/reparations/universal housing/etc without being able to answer every possible hypothetical question about its implementation" is, frankly, horseshit.

The Wright brothers didn't need to be able to design a 747 to build the first airplane.
