20 years ago I sent a fake story to movie website Ain’t It Cool News, claiming that John Rhys-Davies (in town for a convention) hinted he would be voicing General Grievous in Star Wars Episode III.
They published my email in a take-it-or-leave-it way. Other websites then reported that AICN were “reporting” the rumour. It got more reliable with each retelling. Within days, it had made it to mainstream media.
I learned more about misinformation and the news cycle from this than in my entire journalism major.
