One of what is possibly the oldest known symbolic carpets - used to display the symbols and illustrate the working tools of each Degree in European Lodges - was found by chance stored in an iron box buried in Vienna. Discovered during building works in 1860, it must be dated to before 1794, when the practice of Masonry was suspended.

Modern European Lodges still use ceremonial carpets, while English Lodges use tracing boards.

The New Welcome Lodge 5139 was founded in 1929 initially exclusively for Labour Members of Parliament and met in the Palace of Westminster. Founded at the suggestion of the then Prince of Wales, its doors were opened to all men who worked in the Houses of Parliament in 1934 and initiated its first Conservative MP in 1937.

The Lodge no longer meets in the Palace of Westminster, but membership remains exclusive.

Each of the three Craft Degrees of Masonry has a set of working tools, explained both as operative tools for the working stonemason, and speculative tools for Freemasons. They are further defined as:

Tools of action, for the first Degree of Entered Apprentice,

Tools of testing, for the second Degree of Fellow Craft,

Tools of creativity, for the third Degree of Master Mason.

Ignaz Aurelius Feßler (1756-1839) was a Franciscan priest, ordained in 1779, who joined a Masonic Lodge in 1783. In 1809 he was called as Professor to the Alexander Newski Academy in St. Petersburg where, with several government ministers, he completed a report on the work and ideals of Freemasonry.

Based on this report, Czar Alexander I approved the formation of Masonic Lodges in Russia, but then banned them again in 1822.

In 1779 a Lodge under the name Pilgrim was founded in London. The founders include many courtiers from the Court of King George III which, at the time, was German speaking, not English. As a result, the Pilgrim Lodge No. 238 adopted a German language ritual from Sweden, but later changed to the Ritual written, and still in use today, of Friedrich Ludwig Schröder (1744-1816), who had been initiated in Hamburg.

Masons use many means to raise money for those in need. For some American Lodges, there is a special group called the Turtles, joined by answering satirical questions which require a very open mind. The turtle is immortalised in the Song of Solomon:

"...the winter is past, and the flowers appear on the earth, and the time of the singing birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in the land "

What is a Masonic Lodge? There are many definitions, one of which is:

"The whole Lodge [...] is symbolic of the Earth illuminated by the Sun shining from the east, south, and west; covered by day with a 'clouded canopy' and by night by the 'starry-decked heavens'. The Lodge, when revealed to the entering Mason, discovers to him a representation of the world."

"The Lost Word of Freemasonry," Henry Pirtle.

The fourteenth Landmark.

The right of every Freemason to visit and sit in every regular Lodge is an unquestionable Landmark of the Order. This is called the Right of Visitation. This right of visitation has always been recognised as an inherent right which inures to every Freemason as he travels through the world. And this is because Lodges are justly considered as only divisions for convenience of the universal Masonic family.

A simple explanation of the three Masonic Degrees taken from the Ancient Mysteries:

The spring: during which ploughing and planting occur, for the Entered Apprentice.

The summer: the growth and care of what has been planted, for the Fellow Craft.

The autumn: the gathering and storage of the harvest, for the Master Mason.

Youth, Manhood, and Age. Strength, Beauty, and Wisdom.
