In 1779 a Lodge under the name Pilgrim was founded in London. The founders include many courtiers from the Court of King George III which, at the time, was German speaking, not English. As a result, the Pilgrim Lodge No. 238 adopted a German language ritual from Sweden, but later changed to the Ritual written, and still in use today, of Friedrich Ludwig Schröder (1744-1816), who had been initiated in Hamburg.
