A small highlight of our trip this week to North Yorkshire: I picked up this very near fine copy of the 1979 edition of Eliot’s Four Quartets (revised by Valerie Eliot) in a bookshop in Harrogate for just £4.

It bears the signature of Leo Walmsley. It can’t be the author of the same name (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Walmsley) since he died in 1966 but perhaps this was a relative. Anyway, it’s always fascinating to try and do the detective work on these things!

Leo Walmsley - Wikipedia

This was apparently Eliot’s inspiration for the Four Quartets:

I have the A minor quartet on the gramophone, and find it quite inexhaustible to study. There is a sort of heavenly or at least more than human gaiety about some of his later things which one imagines might come to oneself as the fruit of reconciliation and relief after immense suffering; I should like to get something of that into verse once before I die

And my skin got younger and my body got stronger
And my stomach felt hunger for a door that was closed
And my soul heard music for the first time
Beauty was a word I'd use for this gift of gold
Oh Lord, I forgive You, Lord, I forgive You
Lord, I forgive You, make me whole
This music I give You, pain that I live through
Everything I've been through is Yours to hold

Happy birthday, T. S. Eliot. Born this day, 1888.
Here's an extract from Four Quartets, a work that still gives me shivers 30 years after I first studied it at school. (If you've ever wondered, T. S. is for Thomas Stearns.)

@gastarbajterica I love how this is echoed in Zagajewski’s “Try to Praise the Mutilated World” with “wild strawberries” and the music that “flared” at a remembered concert.

Try to Praise the Mutilated World

Try to praise the mutilated world. Praise the mutilated world and the gray feather a thrush lost, and the gentle light that strays and vanishes and returns.
