Finally finished rereading 2666. It is as astonishing as ever. I found the part about the bodies exceptionally hard going this time. I think that this is because I was reading better. It is hard to say why Bolaño is so good. I think that it is in part because he is eschews realism except for horror. When he does do realism it is not pornographic. Realism of the ugly is hard, if not impossible, because art invites us to linger but the ugly repels. Most people who write violence make it 'inviting', hence pornographic. Bolaño, with his belief in literature, is somehow able to great a literary world where truth is the threshold of beauty.

Just finished reading Weike Wang's Chemistry. It is very funny. It is also brilliant and heart wrenching. I wish I had cleverer things to say about it. It is a phenomenal portrait of alienation.
