Dances with Demons, by Honkey Bitch

10 track album

Honkey Bitch
🎧 Band: The Mothers Of Invention
💿 Album: Cruising With Ruben & The Jets (1968)
🎶 Features: Doo-wop concept, satire & homage to 50s vocal groups
📅 Date: 1968
🎛 Reissue: 1984

This was the time Frank Zappa was dealing with an unhappy record label, with radio stations refusing to play Mothers of Invention records. So instead of pushing further into the avant-garde, he did something completely unexpected and went backwards. Or at least it sounded that way.

Cruising With Ruben & The Jets is Zappa stepping into the world of 1950s doo-wop, creating a fictional band and wrapping the whole thing in nostalgia. The first time I heard it, it almost felt like I’d picked up the wrong record, until you start noticing those little twists.
The harmonies are sweet and simple on the surface, but underneath there’s still that Zappa complexity, those odd shifts and details that don’t quite belong in a doo-wop record.

What I like about this one in my collection is the genuine tribute to those old vocal group records from the 50s, but at the same time, it’s clearly Zappa having a bit of fun with the whole idea of pop music and radio expectations.
It's my favourite love songs album ever :)

This copy is from the later reissue line of the 1984 remix, in which Zappa updated parts of the rhythm section. It gives the album a slightly different feel compared to the original 1968 pressings, but cleaner, a bit more modern, while still keeping that retro illusion intact.

It’s definitely one of the more accessible Mothers albums, and one I keep coming back to when I want something lighter from Zappa without losing that clever edge.

🎧 Band: The Mothers Of Invention
💿 Album: We're Only In It For The Money (1968)
🎶 Features: Double album gatefold sleeve. This gatefold album's artwork parodies the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper LP. 180G
📅 Date: 1968
🎛 Reissue: 2016

This is where Frank Zappa and the Mothers hit that sharp edge of satire and sarcasm that defines his best work. It’s fearless, irreverent, and still feels uncomfortably relevant. Every listen reveals another layer!

The parody of the late 60s counterculture or the way it flips the ideals of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band era on its head and stirs the Hippie culture into a sarcastic point of view.

Musically genius... cut up edits, strange transitions, and that collage style Zappa mastered so well. It doesn’t just play like an album; it feels like a statement piece, almost a sonic protest wrapped in dark humour.

This copy in my collection is a reissue, but it still carries that same punch. It’s one of those records I keep coming back to, not just for the music but for the attitude behind it.

At Berlin’s Arkaoda, two distinct approaches to psychedelic and experimental sound meet — Chicago’s masters of cosmic groove, Bitchin Bajas, and Germany’s alchemists of time and sound, Das Ende Der Liebe.

The latest work from the revered trio — Cooper Crain, Rob Frye, and Daniel Quinlivan — marks their first full-length since 2022’s Bajascillators. Written largely while on tour and captured at Chicago’s Electrical Audio, Inland See unfolds across four expansive compositions that function as a unified sonic voyage: elemental in form, fluid in motion, and wholly transportive. The lead single, “Skylarking,” paired with a visualizer by frequent collaborator Nick Ciontea, offers an early window into the album’s glowing inner world.

True to the Bitchin Bajas ethos, Inland See is driven by exploration — music as a process of uncovering, where rhythm and texture merge into a hypnotic, hovering balance. On “Skylarking,” interlocking patterns and global tonalities rise and recede, drifting between ecstatic pulse and meditative drift. It’s a cosmic dance rooted deep in the earth — a piece that, like the album itself, evokes a sensation of weightlessness, of drifting buoyantly through sound.

Special guest: Das Ende Der Liebe (Berlin)

Das Ende Der Liebe work in a different register, but with a similar attention to time and space. Their music stretches and folds rhythm, electronics and live instrumentation into dense, immersive structures. Since SCHNEE* (named one of Groove Magazine’s top releases of 2022) and their new album Persist (winner of the German Record Critics’ Award for Experimental & Electronic), the band — now joined by su dance110 — has pushed further into a sound that draws as much from dark ambient and industrial as it does from psychedelic groove and early electronic music.

This show brings together two artists who approach repetition, texture and movement from opposite angles, meeting somewhere in between: slow motion, deep sound, and a room full of shifting air.

sssiv - all the time (from "sssiv 2", May 8, PCC0023DR)

dreampop - neo-psych - indie folk (copenhagen / los angeles)

https://sssiv.bandcamp.com/track/all-the-time-2

“All the Time” began, like all songs on sssiv 2, as an improvisation: a quiet conversation between Stephen’s sparse bass line and Sasha’s droning, minimalist guitar, unfolding over Sara’s steady, danceable drum groove. The track carries an upbeat yet quietly melancholic atmosphere - warm, spacious, dreamlike - with a certain sense of softness, calm and reassurance.
