#IPrA2023 panel about #corpuslinguistic approaches to #epistemic and #evidential marking in #talkininteration I co-organized together with Jérôme Jacquin. Thanks to all participants! I learnt a whole lot about lexical evidential and epistemic expressions in Galician, Italian, and French, about untranslatable English 'last I checked' constructions, about corpus workflows for "ich weiss nicht" in spoken German, about how to annotate evidentiality in earnings conference calls, and about how wh-placement with situational verbs in French interrogatives is related to evidentiality. The panel was also a good occasion for the InfinIta project team to present our annotation scheme in the making, which will allow us to get a quantitative overview over evidential resources in the #corpusTIGR of spoken Italian.

In the editorial, Jérôme Jacquin and I review a certain amount of literature and reflect on the way ⚖️#epistemic and 👁️👂💡#evidential markers help form and modulate 👎disagreeing actions in various contexts. We then introduce the four contributions to the special issue, written by Maria-Josep Cuenca (Universitat de Valencia), Simona Pekarek Doehler (Université de Neuchâtel), Jérôme Jacquin (Université de Lausanne) and myself (Università della Svizzera italiana).

This is what it is about:
A study of various #corpora of spoken Italian shows that present indicative forms of vedere+che regularly convey #evidential meanings. These range from direct #perception to repeated experience and inference based on visual and non-visual clues. This is true also of forms referring to the addressee. These express #intersubjective sources by means of the generic reading of the 2nd person singular or by means of evidential #implicatures. Such implicatures lead to an extension of reference from an experience made by the addressee during the interaction to an experience shared by the speaker-addressee dyad. A salient property of the latter's in situ intersubjective uses is that the speaker claims #epistemic primacy. This applies to asymmetrical situations such as, for instance, classroom interaction, but also occurs in symmetrical interactions, where it emphasizes the speaker's persuasive commitment.
