🕯️ On This Day in LGBTQ+ History: February 15 ⚠️ February 15, 2018: Federal court ruling allows Mississippi’s HB 1523 to take effect By February 15, 2018, Mississippi’s House Bill 1523, often referred to as the “Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act,” was fully operational after years of legal challenges. The law permitted individuals, businesses, and government employees to cite religious beliefs in denying services to LGBTQ+ people, particularly same sex couples and transgender individuals. Civil rights advocates widely described the law as one of the most sweeping state sanctioned rollbacks of LGBTQ+ protections in the United States at that time. At this moment in history: 🕯️Same sex couples faced legal barriers when seeking marriage related services 🕯️Transgender residents encountered increased discrimination in housing and public services 🕯️Local businesses and faith based institutions were granted broad exemptions impacting employment protections 🕯️LGBTQ+ youth reported heightened stigma and fear as public debate intensified February 15 serves as a context date marking when discrimination was codified into state policy under the banner of religious liberty. For many LGBTQ+ Mississippians, this was not an abstract legal fight but a daily reality affecting safety, dignity, and access to services. Who continued to defend equality National organizations including the Human Rights Campaign, Lambda Legal, the ACLU, and the Southern Poverty Law Center challenged the law in court and supported impacted residents. Locally, groups such as the Campaign For Southern Equality and Mississippi based LGBTQ+ advocacy networks provided community resources, legal referrals, and public education. Faith leaders across the state also organized in opposition, demonstrating that religious freedom and LGBTQ+ equality are not mutually exclusive. #LGBTQHistory #EqualityMatters #ReligiousLiberty #LGBTQMississippi
